A Smile Says It All

Photos from Glenn taken on Wednesday night. .....
I must be honest, I cried with joy seeing Cole in his moms arms. How she waited for that moment. Then to see him grinning from ear to ear ..... "a smile says it all".......WOW.....Yesterday Kirsten had Cole in a stroller and was able to walk around the hospital. He is now able to sit up in his crib, throwing his little football and reading books.
Doctors are so pleased with his progress.
We're just so pleased to see a smile.

Smiles from Cole to mom....

Well we got the news we have all been waiting for for the past week. I just got off the phone with an update from Gram-pa Glenn who is in Calgary.......The grafting is taking well and doctors feel that if Cole's progress continues to go as well as it has, he may even be home for his birthday on May 14th. ....We'll keep our fingers crossed. .... Cole is back at turning pages in his book and shaking his rattle. The highlight of the day is that Cole gave two big genuine smiles to Kirsten..... The doctors are putting Cole back on some medication to help him deal with the itching. Yesterday they moved Cole to the "Burn Ward" from ICU and Kirsten is now doing a lot of the care that Cole needs herself. The last few days have been a bit tough on Cole as he was going through withdrawal from the medications. There is still about 4 weeks to go and more grafting to be done.

Cole and Kirsten had a lot of visitor this past week. The whole McLennen clan ( Gram-ma Shelley's side of the family),..... Gram-ma Margaret and Pete's sisters and family,......girlfriends of Kirsten from the valley....Gram-pa Glenn, Megan, Uncle Ben, Kim, Kathy and Maddie , Scott, Paula, Jordan, and Jake....and I am sure there are many, many, more I do not know of. And of course Pete (Slim).

For those Facebook users....."A Big Get Well Wish for Cole Feldmann" now has 84 members.. ...WOW!!! It is so nice to see.

Till the next update, thank you every body.

To Cole, Kirsten and Pete......You are in our thoughts and prayers, we think of you always. Keep those smiles coming Cole.

Ronald McDonald House and Cole

Last Wednesday was a big day for Cole. Originally the doctors were only going to graft skin from Cole's right leg to his back. Half way into the surgery the doctors felt comfortable with the progress and decided to do the grafting needed to Cole's chest as well. ...BIG DAY!!!... It was interesting to learn that the doctors attached a thin mesh material called "Scarlet Red" over the donor site to protect it from moving. This mesh dissolves as the skin heals. After the surgery Cole was sedated heavily as not to move and let the grafting take.
....On Thursday night Kirsten moved from a room in the Children's hospital to the Ronald McDonald House which is just across the street. ...On Friday Megan and I went to Calgary for a visit and we were able to stay with Kirsten. When arriving at the R.M. House it was like arriving at a 5 star mountain resort for families. It is so! amazing. .......
On Friday night and Saturday morning Cole was still quite sedated. It was necessary to have Cole move as little as possible. He was on full oxygen, and 3 pain medications keeping the nurses busy. On Saturday afternoon that all changed. The oxygen tube came out as well as the catheter. They reduced his pain medications to only Methadone, and what was moments ago a quiet hospital room, became filled with kids music and lyrics, time to wake up and get Cole breathing on his own. ...It was so nice to see his big blue eyes. though still unable to focus long and sedated they were there.... SO... the next big day is on Wednesday when the dressing will be changed and they find out if the grafting took. If all looks good then the next step is grafting of the neck, chin and forehead.
Pete arrived just as we left late Saturday afternoon. Kirsten's cousin, Scott, gave Pete and Kirsten great seats for the Flames vs Oilers game to get their mind off things for a few hours.

On a number of occasions Kirsten mentioned how overwhelmed the family has been feeling about all the support and love from family and friends. From flowers and cards, gifts and emails, visits and phone calls , thoughts and prayers, a big thank you to all.
And to all the staff at the Invermere hospital that attended to Cole ...and to all the amazing nurses and doctors in ICU.....THANK YOU.....THANK YOU.....THANK YOU!!!

Eyes are open

Yesterday morning I got a wonderful phone call from Andrea Hopkins saying that Cole is no longer in a induced comatose state and though still very sedated he follows what is going on with his eyes. When 3 year old Alex Hopkins came into the room Cole gave a giggle.
Last night Ann Hopkins wrote an up to date post in the comments under "April 3, Cole is Breathing on his own." In there Ann states that the swelling has come down quite a bit in Coles face since Friday and he is looking alot like the little cowboy we all know and that skin grafting is to start on Wednesday. (worth a read)
With the farm and calfing season in full swing Pete has had to travel back and forth from the Feldmann ranch. Kirsten and Cole are seldom alone when Pete's in Brisco. Family and friends have been by their side everday. Initially I was concerned about Kirsten and how she was doing but I have been informed by all who have spent time with her that she is holding up extremely well, eating well, and has such a possitive outlook. And I know she is SO! SO! grateful to all the ICU staff and their wonderful care as we all are.
Today is a family day...Pete is with Kirsten and Cole.
To Slim and family....

Cole is breathing on his own.

Hi Everyone

Well things are going O.K. .... Cole has a blood clot in his right leg. They now have him on blood thinners and things are starting to look alot better.
The breathing tube is out and Cole is breathing on his own which is good news. The doctors have Cole on 3 pain medications: Ketamine, Morphine, and Clonidine. Cole was suppose to have been moved out of ICU today but because of his respiratory condition and the pain medications he is required to stay in ICU.
Coles burns cover about 28% of his body. The burns are starting to really show up as 3rd degree. More 3rd degree spots are starting to show up then originaly diagnosed. They hope to start skin grafting next week...They do wonders with that...The staff is amazing! and Cole is in good hands.....

Until tomorrow
Love K
Cole

Email from Kirsten - April 2

Kirsten wrote ....

"Cole is doing good, he is breathing on his own but they have to put him back on morphine today. But looking at his little face kills me but we will get through this and it will be all good. Thank you for your prayers and we will definitely see you soon"

Alright everybody brace yourselves

Hi everybody.

I know there are so many people out there that are worried and concerned about Cole's condition and how Kirsten and Pete are holding up. I am not fully in the loop but I can tell you that Cole is being taken care of by the best in the ICU at the Calgary Childrens Hospital. Kirsten and Pete have been given a room next door to Cole so that one or both are close by. Cole is heavily sedated and resting.

On Monday March 30. Kirsten was preparing dinner and was reaching over to find flour to thicken a stew in a crock pot. Cole reached up and grabbed the cord to the pot and brought the stew down over top of himself burning the side of his face, back and chest. Kirsten immediately grabbed Cole and put him into a bath of cold water. From there Cole was wrapped in wet towels and placed in a snowbank outside to keep the burns from getting worse. According to doctors, Kirsten and Pete's family did everything right and may have saved his life. So now we must let the experts take over and give Cole the best medical care there is.

I think I can speak for everyone when I say that our hearts and thoughts are with Pete, Kirsten and Little Cole through this hard time. Please remember we are all here to help out in any way we can.

Be strong and brave Little Cole and get some rest. Love to you all.... June
