Eyes are open

Yesterday morning I got a wonderful phone call from Andrea Hopkins saying that Cole is no longer in a induced comatose state and though still very sedated he follows what is going on with his eyes. When 3 year old Alex Hopkins came into the room Cole gave a giggle.
Last night Ann Hopkins wrote an up to date post in the comments under "April 3, Cole is Breathing on his own." In there Ann states that the swelling has come down quite a bit in Coles face since Friday and he is looking alot like the little cowboy we all know and that skin grafting is to start on Wednesday. (worth a read)
With the farm and calfing season in full swing Pete has had to travel back and forth from the Feldmann ranch. Kirsten and Cole are seldom alone when Pete's in Brisco. Family and friends have been by their side everday. Initially I was concerned about Kirsten and how she was doing but I have been informed by all who have spent time with her that she is holding up extremely well, eating well, and has such a possitive outlook. And I know she is SO! SO! grateful to all the ICU staff and their wonderful care as we all are.
Today is a family day...Pete is with Kirsten and Cole.
To Slim and family....

  1. Hi every one,
Cole is doing great - swelling is down and eyes are open.
Cole is getting shots of Benadrin as well as an anti anxiety drug – this makes him a bit dopey. He is aware of what is going on around him. Kirsten put a toy in his hand and he tossed it at her. Kirsten put it back in his hand and he tossed it again. This is a game he plays with Pete. You can see how determined he is. Kirsten held a book up for him to look at and Cole was quite upset when she laid it down.
They are giving him blood transfusion today to get his hemoglobin levels back up.
Grandma Jackie and Aunt Bonny came for a visit. It was good for them to see Cole looking so much better. We all went out for lunch. It was a nice break for Kirsten, but she was anxious to get back to Cole’s side.
Tomorrow will be a tough day - Cole will be in surgery for five hours. They will take skin from his upper leg and start grafting to chest and back.
It is a bumpy ride but he is slowly getting to the finish gate.
We all love you Cole – Sleep tight tonight little man.
    Aunty Ann
